Been following the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals?? You should be. The Seattle Sounders sent shock waves through the North American soccer world Tuesday night by upsetting the Tigres and becoming the first MLS side to knock out a Mexican opponent in CCL competition. Despite going down a goal, the Sounder's second half surge, complete with a trio of majestic goals, lifted the West Coast warriors to a 3-2 aggregate win over the Tigres.
Relive the glory at CenturyLink Field here:
In the other quarterfinal fixtures, Monterrey mastered Guatemalan side Xelaju (4-2 aggr.) and Santos Laguna dropped the Dynamo like a bad habit (3-0; 3-1 aggr.). The LA Galaxy eased past Herediano 4-1 at the Home Depot Center, advancing with a landslide victory.
The semifinals will feature two Liga MX vs. MLS showdowns, with LA forcing a grudge match with two-time defending champions Monterrey. The Sounders have their own axe to grind; the last time they faced Santos, they were chewed up and spit out in a 6-1 thrashing in Torreon.
Mouthwatering stuff to be sure...

Battery Trio Shine in CCL Semifinal

Instrumental in Seattle's struggle to reach the Champions League final were three young men who not long ago graced the turf of Blackbaud Stadium. Osvaldo Alonso, Alex Caskey, and Lamar Neagle shined for the Sounders in last night's exciting, albeit disappointing tie with Santos. Caskey and Alonso featured prominently from the starting whistle, while Neagle played the role of super-sub. Caskey flitted in dangerous crosses throughout the match while Alonso's commanding midfield presence allowed Seattle to press the attack. Despite controlling the opening stages, the visitors were punished in the 21st minute, as Santos cashed in on some sloppy defending.
Now battling to overturn a two goal deficit, Seattle clicked on from the second half restart. It was Alonso who lit the fire, with a dazzling run in the 47th minute but his powerful shot was extinguished by Laguna's Sanchez and the chance went begging. Neagle took the pitch in the 61st minute and things began to open up immediately. Initially playing the ball in for Steve Zakuani, Neagle poked home the deflected shot in the 73rd to pull Seattle within one. Ten minutes later, Caskey looped in a deadly cross that was met by Shalrie Joseph at close range. However, the headed ball was snatched up by the ever present Sanchez and Santos would coast to victory in the final minutes.
The result comes as a hard pill to swallow, but its a marked improvement from being eaten alive in the same fixture a year ago. And it may come as little consolation, but a 1-1 draw is a respectable finish considering the Estadio Corona is among the most brutal arenas on the continent. With full bias intended, the Sounders could not have done it without the aid of their former Battery players. Its exciting to see our Charleston alums flourishing at the top flight of the American game and I'm sure many more will follow in their footsteps!
Well done lads!! And as always, UP THE BATTERY!!!

Preseason Continues
With only days before the Carolina Challenge Cup, training camp is in full swing for the Charleston Battery. Here's an inside look as the defending USL Pro Champs dust off the cobwebs and get set to play host to some talent rich MLS squads:WCIV-TV | ABC News 4 - Charleston News, Sports, Weather
Remember, Charleston will face the Vancouver Whitecaps in the second match on Saturday. The 'Caps are captained by EPL legend Jay Demerit and Vancouver just recently signed former Battery striker Tom "Wildman" Heinemann. And since Charleston has been paired with the Houston Dynamo for a few matches this season, it will be good have a look at our MLS competition.
In the meantime, have you been following the Disney Pro Soccer Classic??
So far, its been an excellent showcase of up-and-coming talent, with lively preseason matches between MLS, USL, and NASL teams. All the games are being streamed live on MLSsoccer.com.
An incredibly sharp Columbus Crew steamrolled the Philadelphia Union 4-0 earlier this afternoon. Philly fielded several USL vets called up from Harrisburg, but the Union were no match for the Finlay & Finley show as Dominic Oduro played his part in dismantling the opposition as well.
Can't catch the games live? No problem, highlights and full replays of every match are right here.
Also, the Desert Diamond Cup kicks off tonight as the Seattle Sounders take on the New England Revs. Look for former Arsenal back Mikael Silvestre to feature for Seattle since the Premier League vet was only just snatched up from the Portland Timbers training camp.
Not enough for your football fix? I heard some tidbit about an epic Champions League match or something like that...but if that won't do ya, then you'll just have to wait til Saturday!
(And if for some reason you can't make it to the 'Baud, those games will be streamed live on UNATION!!)
Cheers!

An Emerald City Homecoming
Lamar Neagle will be suiting up with the Seattle Sounders for an unprecedented third time since his initial signing with the West-coast powerhouse. I was surprised to discover only hours after publishing The Major League Connection that it had already become outdated!
The Washington native began his professional career with the Sounders in 2009 having come from UNLV's soccer program. Joining the Charleston Battery in 2010, Neagle earned the USL-2 Golden Boot and League MVP while plying his trade in the Lowcountry. The attacking midfielder spent time abroad, recording a successful spell with Finland's IFK Mariehamn before returning home to once again play with Seattle.
Neagle netted a few crucial goals for the Rave Green in 2011, scoring five goals and two assists while logging only 1,008 on-field minutes. (Not to mention becoming only the second player in franchise history to bag a hat-trick!) He also found the net in the playoffs, but was traded to expansion side Montreal Impact the following year. The Cascadia-born footballer did well in the Impact's system, but was underutilized at best.
While Seattle's midfield department is bursting with talent, this hometown hero is a welcome addition to a promising Sounders squad. Seattle boast the most vibrant supporters in Major League Soccer and I'm sure the Emerald City is ecstatic at the return of one of their own.

The Major League Connection
While the ink has only just dried on the groundbreaking MLS/USL partnership agreement, the relationship between the two leagues is anything but a new one. In fact, most casual fans might dismiss the assertion that the United Soccer League has been instrumental in shaping the dynamic, successful, ever expanding organization we now know as MLS.
Take a look at the teams at the top of the American soccer pyramid. Granted, there are several MLS teams who are football pioneers in their own right, but the Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Montreal Impact were all once among the most competitive sides in the USL.
Now look at the players that make up the mosaic of Major League talent. You've got a handful of international stars (either waxing or waning), a good crop of kids drafted from their college teams, and a gracious harvest of persistent professionals who've made the breakthrough to the top tier of the national system.
Need examples? Well, thanks for asking! Here ya go:
Start with the Seattle Sounders. From Charleston alone they've picked up Osvaldo Alonso, whose become their midfield maestro and team captain. They also nabbed Lamar Neagle who has since been traded to the Montreal Impact. Alex Caskey earned his MLS contract last year and features regularly with the boys in Rave Green.
The Battery's "Wildman", Tom Heinemann, signed first with the Columbus Crew in 2011 following Charleston's incredible Championship season. Flourishing as an impact player, Tom was sidelined by injury in his second year. But the future looks brighter still since the forward just completed a transfer to the Vancouver Whitecaps. During his loan from NY Red Bulls to the Wilmington Hammerheads, last season Cory Hertzog won a spot on the USL All-league team and was easily one of the most entertaining players in USL. Hertzog also recently put pen to paper with the 'Caps.
In Portland, the Timbers can thank the likes of the LA Blues for the striking starlet Bright Dike. Dike's stint in LA paved the way for his acclimation to playing on an even larger stage. Portland's defensive rookie Andrew Jean-Baptiste also spent time with the Blues last summer.
Especially considering the potential of the new MLS/USL partnership, this is really just the beginning. The Charleston Battery has four more players training/on trial with MLS clubs and there's a good chance several of them may make the step up. The Battery's offensive spark and set-piece hero Nicki Patterson is in camp with the New York Red Bulls, having impressed the big boys in their Open Cup outing in the Lowcountry. Jose Cuevas, USL rookie of the year, is being looked at by the Seattle Sounders and is joined by teammate Cody Ellison. Midfielder Ryan Richter, who enjoyed an incredible run of form throughout last year's championship season, is on trial with D.C. United and things look quite promising for him in the Capital.
USL Pro will soon be wrapping up their annual player combine, which promises to pump even more fresh talent into the system and with so many PDL franchises opening up across the States (not to mention the NPSL) the sport in America is growing in leaps and bounds. Now that the nation's two premier leagues have joined forces, the sky is the limit!

Looking Back on a Summer of Soccer (pt.2)
Continuing our roundup of soccer action throughout the warmer months, we'll now take a closer look at some football happenings here in the States ending our tour with a special focus on what has transpired right here in the Palmetto State. Now of course the best place to start is the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Thanks to our temporary internet blackout, I was unable to convey the results of the Semi- and Final matches. So, without further ado, lets pick up where we left off.
US Open Cup
The Seattle Sounders made history in the Cup's Semifinal round by repeating history in a 4-1 whipping of Chivas USA before a capacity crowd at Starfire Sports Complex. Becoming only the third team in cup history to appear in four finals, the Sounders went in search of an unprecedented four consecutive Open Cup titles. In a sloppy and otherwise uninteresting match, Sporting KC bested the Philadelphia Union 2-0 in Philly, thus earning the right to host the final match.
You could not have written a more dramatic script for the Cup Final. Turbulent weather and a downpour of hail were the precursors to this incredible match. The defending title holders and Open Cup legends, the Seattle Sounders entered a frenzied, sold-out Livestrong Park to take on a Kansas City side with something to prove. The match was a defensive war of attrition as each team seemed content on simply survival. But things changed in the 83rd minute as Sporting were awarded a penalty courtesy of a Zach Scott handball. The eleven year Sounders veteran was punished as Kansas City took the lead by converting the kick. However, the scapegoat turned hero by redeeming himself with a finely placed headed goal two minutes later. Extra time could not separate the two and the game was to be decided on penalty kicks. In the third round, a spectacular Gspurning save gave Seattle the edge, only for the score to be leveled with a Sounders miss in the next round. The drama reached a crescendo when another Gspurning save was called back because the keeper was off his line. The Sporting player righted his wrong, and Seattle's Eddie Johnson missed his penalty to hand Kansas City the Cup.
Although history eluded the Seattle Sounders, they didn't leave Livestrong Park empty handed. Oddly enough, since the match ended in a draw, the Sounders unbeaten run in the Open Cup remains intact and the boys in Rave Green have the potential to continue the streak when the tournament begins again next year. Also, former Charleston Battery Osvaldo Alonso was distinguished as the Player of the Tournament owing largely to his prolific scoring habit and incredible midfield form en route to the Cup Final.
It was another fascinating year in the nation's most exciting soccer competition and well met with a thrilling conclusion with the Final. With the trophy only just engraved, I'm already anticipating next year's draw!!
Palmetto Bantams FC

Myrtle Beach Mutiny FC
The story of the Mutiny's inaugural season is in many ways much like that of the Palmetto Bantams. In addition to MBFC, the National Premier Soccer League's Southeast (East) division is home to the Atlanta Silverbacks U23 squad as well as last year's NPSL champion Jacksonville United. With former Charleston Battery striker Patrick "Thunder" Olalere coaching the new outfit, the Mutiny quickly established a local reputation and a loyal following. Despite finishing last in their conference, MBFC displayed quality football with an international flavor and demonstrated strong community involvement. Ending the season with a bang, the Mutiny drubbed the Georgia Revolution 4-1 in front of a live-wire crowd at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in their home finale.
Myrtle Beach's flag waving, band playing fans in the stands, the Lowcountry Crew, were in full force at every home match and practically every preseason match as well. With a strong grass-roots initiative and an already powerful group of supporters, the Myrtle Beach Mutiny FC is sure to go far. Let's here it for excellent football and tradition in the Palmetto State!!

And Then There Were Four, USOC Quarterfinal Round
San Jose Earthquakes 0-1 Seattle Sounders
The fiery match-up between these west coast rivals began with a bang but things turned sour as the match wore on. Cordello Cato, a former Quakes trialist, was Seattle's lone goal hero of the evening. The Trinidadian knocked in his first goal as a Sounder, scoring from a difficult angle by slipping the ball between Bingham's boots in the 19th minute. San Jose are practically the comeback kings of the MLS and the Supporter's Shield leaders switched on to recovery mode. Despite throwing everything forward, including the talismanic Chris Wondolowski, Seattle's stubborn defense, led by would-be Earthquake GK Andrew Weber, refused to yield. Things got nasty in the final stages of the game when San Jose's Alan Gordon was ejected in stoppage time. The Sounder's Eddie Johnson threw a punch after the whistle and the host from up the coast were forced to wait at midfield to be escorted off the pitch by security detail in a scene uncommon to and unbecoming the American game.
Philadelphia Union 5-2 Harrisburg City Islanders
Defensive miscues buried the Islanders early on, and despite some second half splendor, the hole they'd dug was too deep to crawl out of. Sapped by a weekend road trip to Orlando City and Charleston, Harrisburg simply ran out of magic and ran out of steam. Surrendering a PK by means of a handball in the 6th minute, Harrisburg gifted Freddy Adu and the Union with an early lead. Three minutes later, an errant headed ball was gobbled up and struck home by Philly. With half an hour gone, the Union's Pajoy torched the Islander's defense leaving the hosts three goals to the good. Refusing to throw in the towel, Harrisburg mustered two goals in as many minutes shortly after the restart. And while the lightning strike goals were impressive, giving up another PK in the second half all but scuttled their hopes of an upset. Another Union goal in the 81st tacked the final nail in the coffin as Philadelphia handily polished off their USLPRO affiliate.
Sporting Kansas City 3-0 Dayton Dutch Lions
Sporting will look for a double dose of vengeance when they face the Union in the Cup Semis on July 11. Philadelphia recently treated KC to their worst league result of the year, an embarrassing 4-0 loss. And last year, Kansas City was ousted from the Open Cup by USLPRO's Richmond Kickers in a 2-0 shock defeat at home. Finding redemption by dismissing the compliant Dutch Lions, Sporting strolled as a Sapong brace and Zusi strike proved more than enough to advance. The Semifinal tie with the Union should be a rather lively encounter.
Chivas USA 2-1 Charlotte Eagles
On the heels of their recent conquest of the Lonestar state, the Eagles were looking to prolong their historic cup run. And after twenty minutes, Charlotte were dominating the Chivas as the Eagle's Jorge Herrera and Mark Bloom tested former Battery keeper Tim Melia. At the close of the first half, the Chivas had wrested a touch of momentum from the visitors and they would cash in on that momentum shortly after the break. At 64 minutes, Jose Correa netted for the Chivas and the Goats would ride the slim lead nearly to the end of the match. In the 89th minute, Herrera forced the issue by slamming a powerful shot. His shot ricocheted off James Riley and was pounded home but Charlotte's Maricio Salles. The match looked destined for another dramatic extra time finish, but the official was rather generous with his allowance of extra time and Correa headed in the winner from a free kick to vanquish the Eagles deep into extra time.

Open Cup Update: Fourth Round Recap
Another exhilarating installment in this year's Open Cup drama saw half of the fourth round fixtures finish in extra time, and three of the eight games were decided by late penalties. At this stage in the tournament, there were some predictable results but a record three lower division teams (all USLPRO) have made it into the quarterfinals. Here are the latest results from the Cup:
Chivas USA 2-1 Carolina Railhawks
The Railhawks were brought to earth in heartbreaking fashion, losing the match to a penalty decision deep into stoppage time. This game was strangely similar to Carolina's encounter with the Galaxy last week. The Goats held nothing back, fielding a strong first team and the result was a goal in the 31st. The Railhawks looked more confident after the break and after an impressive attacking burst found their equalizer with eleven minutes in regulation. It seemed overtime was in the cards, but a handball decision was called in favor of the Chivas and Juan Pablo Angel buried the PK to end the fixture in stunning fashion.
The Chivas will host the advancing Charlotte Eagles June 26th at the Home Depot Center.
The Eagles are officially 'Kings of Texas' after routing three different opponents in their Open Cup tour of the Lone Star State, as Charlotte continue their impressive run in the tournament. Their latest victims, the NASL's San Antonio Scorpions, were finally beaten with a penalty kick at the end of extra time. Charlotte asserted their dominance early, making the most of their chances and netting in the 28th minute. However, a flagging Scorpions unit clawed their way back into the match, scoring a goal with a quarter hour left on the clock. San Antonio had chances in extra time, but a handball in the box brought things to a bitter end for the hosts.
New York Red Bulls 1-3 Harrisburg City Islanders
(Final after Extra Time)
Harrisburg scored early in the 13th minute against the run of play. However, it was New York who bossed the match, owning nearly every minute of regulation. A heavy spell of pressure after the restart gave the Red Bulls a goal in the 59th. The game proceeded to extra time and Harrisburg found the net almost immediately in the 94th. The Islanders were then subjected to a New York onslaught but held on and even bagged one more goal just before extra time ended.
Harrisburg move on to face the Philadelphia Union in the Quarterfinals. Oddly enough, the Islanders will have a chance to feel out their opponent in an exhibition match with their MLS affiliate on June 12 before their Open Cup date two weeks later.
Philadelphia Union 2-1 DC United
(Final after Extra Time)
In a lively tangle between the two Eastern Conference foes, Philly got the better of United but needed extra time to do so. Both teams scored in first half stoppage time, the Union notching the first goal and DC responding hardly a minute later. The match was a scrappy one and there were send-offs for each side in the extra period. But more importantly, there was a Philadelphia goal that came just after that extra time started.
Dayton Dutch Lions 2-1 Michigan Bucks
(Final after Extra Time)
For a team with little to no league success, the Dayton Dutch Lions are making Open Cup history. Coming off a massive win against the Columbus Crew, the Lions advanced with a dramatic victory, visiting the PDL's Michigan Bucks. Unfortunately for the Bucks, it will be remembered as a match they "could have won", as they dominated play but failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Dayton struck first in the 13th and the teams continued to exchange shots in minor skirmishes. Michigan leveled the game just after half time, but could not find the game winner. Despite an audacious surge by the Bucks in extra time, they conceded a penalty and Dayton's Joel DeLass stamped the Lions ticket to the next round.
The Dutch Lions will challenge Sporting KC at LiveStrong Park in the Quarterfinals.
Colorado Rapids 0-2 Sporting Kansas City
Sporting were the beneficiaries of a Colorado own goal in the 29th minute. A free quick took a turn off the keeper, then the post, then keeper again on its way into the net. A CJ Sapong header put the game beyond doubt in the 79th minute.
Cal FC 0-5 Seattle Sounders
Crushing the dreams of the would-be Cinderella Cal FC, the Sounders thrashed their opponents with a torrent of five goals in a twenty minute span. To their credit, the visitors kept Seattle at bay for the entirety of the first half, but the floodgates were opened shortly after the break. As in the Silverback's fixture, Alonso led the way, scoring from the spot in the 50th. Freddy Montero delivered a brace and Andy Rose found the net again in the 65th minute. Combining once more with Caskey, Alsonso bookended the scoring with a brace of his own, thus completing Cal's epic Open Cup run.
Minnesota Stars FC 0-1 San Jose Earthquakes
It took them eighty-five minutes to do so, but the Quakes finally managed to unlock a stubborn Minnesota defense. Still relishing the footballing lesson they delivered to RSL a week before, the Stars engaged San Jose with confidence. They opted to play defensively, coming out of their shell on incisive counterattack runs. And although the Stars did shine, Lenhart's late goal was just enough to sink the NASL squad.
It seemed overtime was in the cards, but a handball decision was called in favor of the Chivas and Juan Pablo Angel buried the PK to end the fixture in stunning fashion.
The Chivas will host the advancing Charlotte Eagles June 26th at the Home Depot Center.
Charlotte Eagles 2-1 San Antonio Scorpions
(Final after Extra Time)

The Eagles have conjured their best cup run to date, defeating the El Paso Patriots, FC Dallas, and now the Scorpions. The win earns Charlotte a draw with Chivas USA at the HDC. Interestingly enough, their second best OC performance, in 2005, was a win at El Paso and then an hotly contested 3-2 overtime loss to the Chivas.
Its Time for the MLS CUP!!
Well, the playoffs are over and Sunday night the LA Galaxy will host the Houston Dynamo at the Home Depot Center for the MLS Cup Final. The International break has only added to the anticipation of the big game. In an earlier post, I recapped the wild card playoff matches and the 1st leg conference semifinals. If you're wondering how things progressed, we'll catch you up to speed:
Sporting KC 2-0 Colorado Rapids
Predictably, Sporting saw off a depleted Rapids side in a sloppy affair before a rain-drenched sellout crowd at Livestrong Park. Both goals came from Zusi freekicks, about half way through the first and second periods. A strong performance by the hosts, and a repeat of the first leg.
Seattle Sounders 2-0 Real Salt Lake
In a thrilling second leg victory, the Sounders battled ferociously to overturn the deficit from the previous leg. Two second half goals frenzied Centurylink field however, the Emerald City was unable to produce the needed miracle. Both goals came from former Charleston Battery players as Osvaldo Alsonso converted a penalty kick in the 56th, and Lamar Neagle netted the second six minutes later. A valiant effort, but not enough to continue Seattle's postseason dreams.
Houston Dynamo 1-0 Philadelphia Union
The Dynamo finished off the Union in a game that was anything but spectacular. Brian Ching, the perennial Dynamo hero, netted the only goal deep into first half stoppage time. Philly made at triple substituion at 66 minutes and it sparked an immediate offensive threat. The visitors however, were unable to turn the tide. The Union can be proud of an excellent second season and notching an incredible finish as a newer expansion franchise.
LA Galaxy 2-1 NY Red Bulls
The Red Bulls struck first in the fourth minute, looking to make history as the first visiting team to leave the HDC victorious. The game was a tense, back and forth match, with everything to play for despite LA's advantage. The Galaxy leveled the score as Mike Magee headed home a deadly Beckham corner kick. New York would have more opportunities in the second half, but a penalty decision and Donovan goal iced the game in the 75th. A great series between the two MLS giants, the aggregate ending 3-1.
The Conference Championships:
Sporting KC 0-2 Houston Dynamo
Sporting boasted a record 20,839 fans for this playoff fixture. The hosts came out guns blazing and nearly scored in the second minute. The Dynamo suffered a critical blow as MLS MVP candidate Brad Davis was seriously injured and taken off in the 35th minute. Sporting took advantage and bullied their guests till the break. The second half was very different from the first and the Dynamo scored from some set piece pinball at 53 minutes. KC was grasping at straws and had several good opportunities, not to mention an appeal for a PK. However, the result was no longer in doubt when Carlo Costly seized on a through ball, making use of the post as he ended Sporting's successful season, three minutes from time.
LA Galaxy 3-1 Real Salt Lake
This game was expected to be quite lively and both teams delivered. RSL took the pitch with something to prove and dominated the opening quarter hour. A slackened pace allowed LA to take back momentum and a 21st minute Donovan PK shifted the pendulum in their favor. The claret and cobalt responded quickly, as Saborio level less than two minutes later. Robbie Keane nearly edged LA ahead but instead hit the post before firing wide moments later. RSL had some good chances in the closing stages of the first half as Beckerman rattled the upright just before the break. Right away the Galaxy had two near goals, but the RSL defense was able to cope. However, the visitors soon caved to the pressure as David Beckham and Mike Magee combined to score for the third time in three matches. The pair are in unstoppable form at present. Nearly leveling immediately, RSL's Espindola clanged off the bar and it seemed Real could hit every part of the goal except the net. As RSL pressed to equalize, they exposed their defense and Robbie Keane was quick to punish the error. The game was all but finished as he found the net on a counterattack in the 68th minute. The visitors rallied and forced some excellent saves from Josh Sauders, but the damage was already done.
...and so that brings us to Sunday! The LA Galaxy face Houston at the Home Depot Center!! The match will be broadcast at 9:00pm and is airing on ESPN, Galavision, and TSN 2. The Galaxy are the heavy favorites and will expect to preserve their unbeaten record at home this year. The LA threat will come from several angles as the Beckham/Magee show searches for a memorable Season Finale. Also, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan will surely test the Dynamo's defense. LA's defense on the other hand has proved to be nearly unbreakable, and the resolution of the home crowd will only bolster their performance. Houston have their work cut out for them, and with great form finishing the season and some unlikely playoff results under their belt, they are certainly capable of an upset even without star Brad Davis. It looks to be an exciting match however you slice it, and I'll be sure to follow up with the postgame report next week! Enjoy!!

Houston Dynamo 1-0 Philadelphia Union
The Dynamo finished off the Union in a game that was anything but spectacular. Brian Ching, the perennial Dynamo hero, netted the only goal deep into first half stoppage time. Philly made at triple substituion at 66 minutes and it sparked an immediate offensive threat. The visitors however, were unable to turn the tide. The Union can be proud of an excellent second season and notching an incredible finish as a newer expansion franchise.

MLS Madness: Playoff Update!
If the regular season was any indication of what to expect this year in the MLS Cup Playoffs, the weekend's games proved to be even crazier and more unpredictable than most pundits and fans would have guessed. If you missed any of the action, we'll catch you up to speed.
The Wildcards:
FC Dallas 0-2 New York Red Bulls
In a cagey, high-tempo matchup in Dallas, the Red Bulls eliminated the Hoops as Joel Lindpere hit the deciding goal from close range. Thierry Henry iced the cake with another seven minutes into stoppage time.
Colorado Rapids 1-0 Columbus Crew
The Rapids were able to ride Omar Cummings' goal to victory as they put forth a solid defensive performance against Columbus, delivering the Crew's ticket home two years running.
Down to Business:
Real Salt Lake 3-0 Seattle Sounders
Wow...definitely a result that no one predicted! RSL looked a completely different side that was winless in the last month and a half of the regular season. And Seattle were uncharacteristically taken apart in their visit to the Rio Tinto. With goals just before and just after the break, and another just before the final whistle, the Sounders, arguably the most versatile and talented side in the league, will have their hands full crawling out from under such a deficit. However, if it can be done, Seattle would be the team to do it, as they boast broken records for attendance and goals scored in their home matches this year. The second leg of this one should be a cracker!
New York Red Bulls 0-1 Los Angeles Galaxy
Certainly the most high-profile matchup so far, the game itself did not disappoint, and there were postgame fireworks to boot! Galaxy wonder-boy Mike Magee, nudged his side ahead with only a quarter hour gone. Frustration is a mild term for the emotions experienced by the Red Bulls for it seemed they were simply not supposed to score. The Galaxy's Josh Saunders worked miracles between the sticks and singlehandedly preserved LA's lead. In a furious melee after the final whistle, Rafa Marquez and Juninho were both shown red cards for inciting a hockey-style brawl. It may prove well for the Red Bulls because Marquez's season long dramatic tirades and antics are more befitting to a third division benchwarmer than a top flight player, not to mention the Mexico National Team captain. New York will have to make history by winning at the Home Depot Center, but this replay will also be a VERY exciting match.
Philadelphia Union 1-2 Houston Dynamo
The Union played host in their first ever playoff match as the Dynamo played spoiler in their first ever win over Philly. The action was all in the first half, Houston netted seven minutes on and Sebastian LeToux retaliated two minutes later. The Dynamo completed the win with another goal in the 30th. The teams will finish the appointment at Robertson Stadium in Houston.
Colorado Rapids 0-2 Sporting Kansas City
Teal Bunbury's brace saw off the Rapids at DSG Park, and the home side was hit heavily by injuries. An already spread thin Rapids squad will be hard pressed to overturn the scoreline when they travel to Livestrong Park to face an increasing dominant Sporting at home.

Seattle Three-peat, USOC Final: Sounders 2-0 Fire
The Sounders have done it again! Defeating the Chicago Fire 2-0, Seattle claimed the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the third consecutive year. The game had all the makings of a cup final classic, including a record crowd of 35,615. The two sides are no strangers to the cup and their experience was evident as the teams took the pitch.
The first half yielded no goals but the Chicago GK Sean Johnson would be happy to shoulder the blame of that statistic. Seattle's Mike Fucito created several scoring chances for the Sounders throughout the first half but the Fire's defense weathered the storm. The half ended as Freddy Montero clanged a shot off the bar, but for all their effort, the teams were level at the break.
It was Fucito who looked to ignite the crowd only minutes into the second half, but his effort struck the post as Chicago dodged yet another bullet. A goal was in the offing and the raucous rave green mass could sense it. The Emerald City boasts perhaps the most terrifying atmosphere anywhere in the U.S. and the Fire were feeling the pressure. The Sounders began the barrage and it was simply a matter of time until the levy broke. With each shot and save the intensity and volume continued to skyrocket. The Sounder's Erik Freiburg sent in a corner which was met by Brad Evan's on target header. Once again, Windy City shot-stopper thwarted the attempt, but only to deliver the ball to Seattle's familiar Colombian hero, Freddy Montero. Needless to say, the Sounder's frontman ripped the ball into the net as the expectant crowd erupted in jubilation. In desperation, the Fire made a pair of substitutions and began to fight for their equalizer. Surprisingly, the visitors forced a miraculous save from Keller, but the effort was adjudged to be offside. Deep into stoppage time, former Charleston Battery player Osvaldo Alonso weaved through a weary Fire defense and slotted home to ice the cake and the game. The whistle sounded seconds later and the Seattle Sounders made cup history with the 2-0 win.
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in the country and one of the oldest competitions of its kind in the modern sports world. Seattle are on of only three sides to ever win three consecutive USOC titles. Sounder's GK and former US National Captain, Kasey Keller, has said the team are far from finished as they rush towards the MLS Cup playoffs and have progressed to the knockout stage in the CONCACAF Champions league. Seattle are certainly the most exciting team to watch and will undoubtedly exhibit some fantastic football in the coming weeks.

Battery Standout Makes Name for Himself in MLS
There are good games. There are great games. And if you're lucky, you may happen to witness some dazzling jewel of a football spectacle. Last Saturday at Centurylink Field in Seattle, there occurred such a match. By the billing alone, it was destined to be an incredible 90 minutes as Eastern Conference leaders the Columbus Crew looked to upset the streaking Seattle Sounders, one of this season's west coast powerhouse sides. History was not in Columbus's favor and by the end of the afternoon, fans and pundits alike would be overawed with the glut of goals and shattered records.
Things began quickly for the hosts as the former Charleston Battery striker and USL-2 League MVP Lamar Neagle made the most of a quick throw in, jetting past the Columbus defense. With barely three minutes off the clock, Neagle fired an honest, powerful shot that proved too much for the grasp of William Hesmer, the Crew goaltender. An already rampant Emerald City crowd were given more cause for celebration as Mauro Rosales tacked on another in the 16th. The goal resulted from an unlucky penalty decision against Columbus's Balchan who had already had a bad day. Five minutes later Neagle bagged his brace as the hometown hero executed a skillful volley from a long cross. It had been all Rave Green up to this point...and the trend would continue. On the forty minute mark, Mike Fucito netted his first of the season and Seattle broke the MLS record for first half goals scored, ending an almost perfect 45 minutes.
Things began to look just a little better for the visitors in the second half...but only just. Another penalty decision gave Jeff Cunningham opportunity and he converted to break yet another MLS record. With the goal, Cunningham now has 134 in his MLS career, passing Jaime Moreno of DC United. Assuming the black and gold had reason to celebrate, Neagle's hat-trick in the 70th demolished that notion. Unequivocally his best goal of the day, an inspired shot from distance punished the crossbar, touched just past the line, and then soared back out of the net. The lad had just marched into the history books with nearly 37,000 fans chanting his name. Three minutes later, the Crew would score from a free kick just outside the box and in bizarre irony Josh Gardner would negate his own strike with an own goal less than a minute later. Ending 6-2, the game proved a picture perfect example of the thrill and tradition of Major League Soccer. So ended a historic day for the Emerald City and a superlative display by the unstoppable Sounders.
It was a fantastic day for the Seattle Sounders, a feather in the cap of Major League Soccer, and career day and world class performance for Lamar Neagle. The young forward began the season fighting for a roster spot and has continued to impress and grow throughout the season. Number 27 has started 9 games and appeared in 21, logging 869 minutes this season in all competitions. Neagle has scored six goals and registered one assist. The match was certainly Seattle's brightest of the season so far. Pushing for another record, the Sounders will appear in the US Open Cup Final against the Chicago Fire on Tuesday October 4th. Should they win, they will be the first team to win the USOC three years on the bounce.
We Battery Fans congratulate Lamar on a fantastic day and an incredible achievement, wishing the best from the Palmetto State.
